Principal speak

Dr. (Ms.) Pramila Kudva, Principal of Pawar Public school Kandivali

I had the privilege of judging the first ever poetry writing and recitation organised by the Public speaking group 'All for Kids' for my school children. They were so excited and so was I. I was given to understand that they would not only recite the poem but they had also written it themselves. It was an amazing experience. They had the right expressions, the right posture, right intonation and above all, confidence. So, what is the importance of elocution in the life of students?

To look at the importance, we need to step back a little and look at the skills of Language which are speaking, reading and writing. Communication is one of the critical skills that an individual needs to develop in order to be successful in adult life.

The dictionary defines elocution as the skill of expressive speech, with distinct pronunciation and articulation. In other words, Elocution clearly helps to build on the communication skills of the child. It ensures discarding of the regional twangs and mannerisms and helps to accept the globally understood 'neutral accent'. This means that the child should be able to read any content with the correct tone and voice modulation. Speaking right and speaking well are interlinked to elocution.

Elocution classes stress on the usage of words and vocabulary which could lead to better control over the grammar of the language. They also focus on the stance needed to speak on the stage which in turn adds to the child's confidence. It also helps to promote the love of the written and spoken language.

I end with a quote. "Oratory is the power to talk people out of their sober and natural opinions" Joseph Chatfield.

Dr. (Ms.) Ranjini Krishnaswamy, Director of Dosti Foundation school:

Through Drama one can live a million lives, be a hundred different people and in the process get back to the daily life all energised and revitalised. However, not everyone is confident before a crowd or making a speech. This calls for a special grooming and training.

Speech & Drama today have become indispensable in the curriculum of any student. Educators the world over have realised the importance of oral feedback and assessment; it has now found a place in evaluation strategies.

When you meet a person for the first time, what strikes you most is her speech - its clarity, the intonation and voice modulation. These do not develop in a day, it takes years to learn and polish. When you speak well, you are confident and you don't fumble for words or make exaggerated gestures. You are poised and are able to communicate ideas and concepts with ease. Good speaking skills are essential in all aspects of life and not just to score marks or pass an examination.
